UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at UPMC Hamot

Scholarship Campaign

This is about tradition.

There are more than 700 students and 100 faculty members in the four UPMC Schools of Nursing. Among these is the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Nearly 2,500 students have graduated from the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing in the 125 years since it was founded. Now that tradition will carry on at UPMC Hamot, whose own legacy of nursing education dates back to 1890.

Longevity is only a part of the story.

A higher percentage of these graduates pass the National Council Licensure Examination for RNs and become qualified nurses. Equally important, a higher percentage of these students remain in the UPMC health system when they pursue their careers.

The values of the school are a succinct statement of its mission: patient-centered care, teamwork, evidence-based practice, continuous improvement, safety, and informatics-based decision-making. From the outset, the focus is on patient interaction and personalized, closely guided learning.

In its first year, the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at UPMC Hamot would graduate 46 students, taking 69 credits in four semesters. Classroom instruction is conducted the former Wayne Middle School and Gannon University, and clinical training at UPMC Hamot. It is a rock-solid preparation for state licensure, as well as for a future BSN. In the consecutive years, the class number would double, then nearly triple, with the need for an active waitlist.

The UPMC Jameson School of Nursing has an extraordinary tradition of success. And now that tradition is carried on in our community.

This is about health care.

UPMC Hamot is one of the fastest growing hospitals in the UPMC health system and also in the state. However, the average age of our nurses continues to rise, with a corresponding increase in the number who annually retire. Nursing quotas increase with the volume and acuity of care, and as UPMC Hamot expands its critical care capabilities and caseload, the result is even more demand for additional nursing staff.

Nursing excellence is a tradition at UPMC Hamot. ANCC Magnet® designation, a distinction reserved for the best of the best, testifies to the skills and education of our nurses. Magnet designation also underscores the direct link between nursing quality at UPMC Hamot, and patient satisfaction and positive outcomes.

To preserve this tradition, and to fulfill our mission of service, we've opened the door to young people in our community who may not see nursing education in a university setting as a viable career path. The UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at UPMC Hamot is an avenue for these people to receive a diploma in only 16 months, to become registered nurses, and to have an excellent chance to continue to progress to a BSN degree.

This is about people.

Nurse Hands

There is disparity among young people in our community. Many come from backgrounds where there is an abundance of resources and motivation to pursue higher education and aspire to chosen careers.

Many others, however, do not.

In our community, excellent four-year nursing programs are available for prospective nurses who have the time and financial resources to pursue Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. Our program offers an additional option and a direct route to an RN degree.

The UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at UPMC Hamot is a partnership among UPMC Hamot, UPMC Jameson, Gannon University, Hamot Health Foundation, and UPMC Hamot Aid Society. What this partnership is offering is a direct, 16-month path to a career in medicine.

The new $10.5 million facility on the second floor of the former Wayne Middle School will serve as state-of-the-art classrooms for just over 100 nursing students per year. Additional courses in electives will be provided at Gannon University, and clinical training will be conducted at UPMC Hamot.

This is about opportunity.
