Children’s Care Fund — Blake and Brantley Gilbert's Story
The community's support of the Children’s Care Fund is what makes beautiful success stories like Blake and Brantley Gilbert's a reality.
Their mother, Kandas Gilbert, shares her account of their remarkable journey below:
"Our journey at UPMC Hamot started at 24 weeks, when I went into early labor with my twins. The nurses and doctors were absolutely amazing. They made sure that they'd do whatever it takes to keep our sweet boys safe, as well as keep me calm and taken care of. After a couple days, the nurses were able to stop my contractions and I was sent home to continue bed rest. At 30 weeks and 4 days, I went into labor again. This time, the nurses did everything they could to stop my contractions — but on Nov. 8, 2020, at 30 weeks and 5 days old, Blake and Brantley were born by cesarean section. They were taken straight to the NICU and stayed there until Dec. 31. The biggest thing that got me through the time I couldn’t be by their side was the fact that I could see the boys through the NICU cameras. That got me through some rough days."
