John* has learned a lot about resilience in the past few months, shaped by life on the streets and the support he found there. “There’s more to life than just making money and being happy. Becoming homeless has taught me to be kind,” he said.

Four months ago, John left Texas and a career in security to build a future in Erie. But shortly after arriving, he found himself without his belongings, vehicle, or a place to live. For the first time in his life, he was homeless.

He sought shelter at the Erie City Mission, determined to rebuild from the ground up. That’s where he met Marissa Dewey-Ramos, BUILD CDC’s community health worker and insurance enrollment navigator.

Marissa began meeting with John weekly, helping him navigate immediate needs like warm winter clothes and health insurance, while also building toward longer-term goals like employment and housing.

For John, these weekly meetings became a turning point.

“You can go to the best college and be the smartest person in the world, but there’s no college anywhere that teaches you to care. Marissa cares, and that's given me a reason not to give up.”

With Marissa's support and guidance, John secured part-time work at a local thrift store to generate immediate income while also pursuing longer-term career paths aligned with his background in security. That effort led to a promising opportunity with UPMC Hamot's security team. As part of the hiring process, he is completing a state-required certification and, in the meantime, remains stably employed full-time as a contracted security guard.

With each step he’s taken, Marissa has been alongside him, advocating on his behalf, navigating complex systems, and ensuring he has the stability needed to leap forward, not simply get by.

His determination has inspired those around him. “John is the best client to ever come through here,” said Phil Fromyer, manager at Erie City Mission. “He arrived with nothing but the clothes on his back, and now he’s close to securing a job with UPMC Hamot armed security. He’s amazing.”

John's story is about purpose as much as perseverance. Even in the midst of personal hardship, the stability Marissa helped create has enabled John to give back to the community. He volunteers twice a week, returning to the thrift store that first employed him and serving with Harvest 912 at the seasonal overflow shelter, offering boots and foot care to other individuals experiencing homelessness.

Now, John is moving up the waiting list for the Lodge on Sass, a crucial step toward ever-greater stability. He continues working, saving his money, volunteering, and meeting regularly with Marissa. Each step forward is the result of consistent outreach and trusted guidance.

Thanks to supporters like you, Marissa and the Street Outreach team can continue meeting people where they are, providing the resources, compassion, and expertise that help individuals find their footing and build new beginnings.
