Erie, Pennsylvania – Hamot Health Foundation (HHF) named Dr. Barry Stamm a Lifetime Corporator at the organization’s recent Board of Corporators meeting. This honor recognizes Dr. Stamm’s nearly five decades of service, leadership and support of UPMC Hamot and the Erie community.

Stamm, a longtime Erie ophthalmologist, has been connected to Hamot since receiving his medical staff appointment in 1978. Over the years, that relationship grew well beyond his medical practice. He served on the Hamot board from 2011 to 2013, held leadership roles with Hamot Health Foundation and has remained a dedicated philanthropist and supporter of the Foundation’s work.

“An Honorary Lifetime Corporator is somebody who has given much of their career to this organization and truly believes in the mission of what we do. Barry has done so much for this community. He has been a wonderful board member, a mentor to me and our team, a generous donor and a true leader. He is more than deserving of this recognition.”

Stamm’s history with Hamot began long before he became a physician. During the recognition, he recalled sitting in the hospital’s waiting room as a young man while awaiting the birth of his younger sister, never imagining that years later he would establish his medical practice at the same institution.

“My allegiance to Hamot goes back a long ways. When I look at what was here when my sister was born, and even when I started my practice here, and look at what the Foundation and Hamot are doing now, it’s overwhelming what has occurred.”

A graduate of Hahnemann University School of Medicine in 1974, Stamm completed his residency training at Mount Sinai Medical Center before building a long career in ophthalmology in Erie. Outside of medicine, he has also been recognized for his leadership, entrepreneurship and philanthropy in the community.

Stamm and his late wife, Carol, were longtime supporters of education and UPMC Hamot. In 2022, the Carol Ann Stamm Scholarship was established in her memory to support education, continuing a commitment the couple shared throughout their lives.

For Stamm, the Honorary Lifetime Corporator recognition reflects a relationship with Hamot that has spanned much of his life and one he says will continue.

“I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Hamot person. I have been all my life, and I will continue to be forever.”
